🔥 1 day streak

This is why you should start your new years resolutions early

They say that the best time to grow a tree was 10 years ago, the second best time is now. Waiting until new years to get started on your goals is kind of a fun way to bring in the new year, and it’s probably good to set some challenges for yourself. Unfortunately, most people probably either set the wrong goals or by the time february rolls around they haven’t kept the habit alive.

Start now

My favorite two words in the english language are why wait? I didn’t wait for retirement to travel the world with my wife, I didn’t wait until I had a yard to get a dog, and I’m definitely not going to wait until the new year to achieve next years goals and neither should you! One reason why not waiting is great, is that you get a jump start on things and you can ease yourself into a routine well before January 1st. There’s no pressure! Jan 1st is just like any other day, you keep your streak alive and you go on living.

Habits are hard to break

Another great reason why you should start now instead of waiting is that mid January you’ll already be well on your way to a habit. You will know when you’re in habit territory too by the way you start to get anxious when you haven’t completed your goal for the day. It’s like why is this happening, I haven’t completed it, and suddenly it’s at the top of your mind and you just need to do it before you go to sleep no matter what. That’s a habit.

Set the right goals

Whatever you do, even if you start on the 1st, make sure that you set goals, not outcomes. Here are some examples:

  • Get 7 people a week to use streaking
  • Make a sale from my security focused uptime monitoring app
  • Add 10 more followers on twitter

Those aren’t goals, those are outcomes, you can’t force people to do what you want them to, you can only do your best to achieve those outcomes, better goals would be

  • Ask 70 people to use streaking
  • Send 10 cold emails to security conscious companies
  • Tweet about my progress as a maker

Now those are goals, those are things in your control that you can do without anyone else. The outcomes are out of your control so don’t get down if things don’t turn out the way you wanted them to.
